Drive position is a market decision, not a preference

Roughly a third of the world drives on the left and needs right-hand drive vehicles. If you are importing into the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Nepal, Guyana, Suriname or most Caribbean islands, you need RHD. Importing LHD vehicles into these markets is either illegal or heavily restricted.

What actually changes in a right-hand drive vehicle

Buyers sometimes assume RHD means moving the steering wheel. In a factory-built RHD vehicle the changes run much deeper:

  • Steering and pedal assembly mirrored, including the steering column, rack geometry and pedal box.
  • Dashboard and instrument binnacle tooled as a separate part, not a flipped version of the LHD part.
  • Wiper pattern reversed so the driver's side sweep is correct.
  • Headlight beam pattern aimed for left-side traffic, which is a legal requirement in most RHD markets.
  • Wiring harness, HVAC ducting and brake booster repositioned.
  • Door mirrors, seat belt anchorages and airbag calibration revalidated for the mirrored layout.

Why converted vehicles are a risk

Some exporters offer LHD vehicles converted to RHD after production. These conversions can pass a casual inspection while failing on the things that matter: airbag timing calibrated for the original seating position, brake line routing that was never crash tested, and headlight units that still throw light into oncoming traffic. Many RHD markets now reject converted vehicles at registration, and insurers may decline cover. If a supplier's RHD price looks unusually low, ask whether the vehicle was built RHD on the production line or converted afterwards.

Effect on lead time and cost

Factory RHD production typically adds two to four weeks to the lead time, because RHD units are built in batches rather than continuously. On unit cost the difference is usually modest for high-volume models and larger for niche models where RHD tooling has low utilisation. For special purpose vehicles and platform chassis, RHD is often quoted per project rather than as a fixed uplift.

Mixed fleets and transitional markets

A few markets permit both configurations, or are transitioning. In these cases the deciding factors are usually resale value, parts availability and driver familiarity rather than regulation. If you sell into several neighbouring countries with different rules, splitting the order into an LHD batch and an RHD batch is normally cheaper than importing one configuration and converting part of it later.

What to confirm before ordering

  1. The legal requirement in the destination country, including any exemption for special purpose or agricultural vehicles.
  2. Whether the vehicle will be factory-built RHD, in writing, in the specification annex.
  3. The headlight beam pattern specification and whether it matches your registration inspection.
  4. Speedometer units: kilometres per hour, miles per hour, or dual scale.
  5. Whether spare parts for the RHD-specific components are stocked or must be ordered with the vehicles.
