Fuel Quality and Engine Selection in Emerging Markets

Fuel is usually treated as a local detail to be dealt with after the vehicles arrive. It is more useful to treat it as a specification input, because it constrains engine choice, filtration, service intervals and warranty exposure all at once.

Diesel: sulphur and cleanliness

Two properties matter and they fail in different ways.

Sulphur content determines what aftertreatment the vehicle can carry. It also affects engine oil: sulphur produces acidic combustion products that deplete the oil's additive package faster. In high-sulphur markets, oil drain intervals have to be shortened relative to the manual, and telling the customer this before the first service is far better than explaining it after an engine failure.

Contamination — water and particulate — is the more immediate problem in many markets, and it comes from storage and handling rather than from the refinery. Fuel decanted from drums, stored in uncovered tanks, or transferred without filtration carries both.

Modern common-rail injection systems run at very high pressure with extremely fine clearances. Water causes corrosion and cavitation at the injector; particulate causes abrasive wear. Injector failure from contaminated fuel is common, expensive, and generally excluded from warranty — which makes it a commercial problem for the importer as well as a technical one.

Filtration as a specification item

Where fuel quality is uncertain, the useful adjustments are:

  • A water-separating pre-filter in addition to the standard fuel filter. This is the single most effective protection for a common-rail system and is inexpensive relative to one injector set.
  • A shortened fuel filter replacement interval, stated in the handover documentation rather than left to the manual.
  • Spare filters in the initial parts package, in quantity. Filters are cheap, they are the most-consumed service item, and running out of them is what causes workshops to extend intervals.

For fleet customers, a bulk fuel filtration and water separation setup at their depot protects the whole fleet and is worth raising even though it is outside what you are selling.

Petrol: octane

Octane rating describes resistance to knock. An engine with a high compression ratio needs high-octane fuel; supplied with lower octane it will knock, and the engine management will retard ignition to prevent damage.

The consequences are gradual rather than dramatic: reduced power, higher fuel consumption, and a customer who concludes the vehicle underperforms. Where the market's normal grade is lower octane, specifying an engine designed around that grade produces a better outcome than specifying a more powerful engine that will operate permanently derated.

Two further points worth checking: whether ethanol-blended petrol is common, since blends above certain levels require compatible fuel system materials; and whether the market's stated octane is measured on the same scale used in the vehicle's specification, as different measurement conventions produce different numbers for the same fuel.

Altitude

Related and frequently missed. Naturally aspirated engines lose power roughly in proportion to air density, so a vehicle operating consistently above 2,000 m produces noticeably less power than its rating. Turbocharged engines compensate to a degree, which makes turbocharging worth specifying for high-altitude markets even where it would otherwise be optional.

This matters for load-carrying vehicles in mountainous regions, where a naturally aspirated engine adequate at sea level struggles on gradients.

What to ask the buyer

  1. What diesel grade is actually available where the vehicles will operate, and does it vary seasonally or regionally?
  2. How is fuel stored and dispensed — station pump, depot tank, or drums?
  3. What petrol grade is standard, and is it ethanol blended?
  4. What altitude range will the vehicles work at?
  5. Is urea distributed reliably, if SCR is under consideration?

These five answers change the recommended specification more than almost anything else in the enquiry, and buyers rarely volunteer them because they do not expect the questions.
